  • VOACAP online predictions

    (english language below)

    - short path o long path

We need a forecast of openings with a particular DX station that we are looking for ? Instead of waiting every time the baby food and knowing that it is best to teach to fish rather than simply handing out fish, in the website www.voacap.com it has been made available an effective way to make your own charts of interest. This is essentially the online implementation of the well known software VOACAP.
Many of us now use this software in stand-alone, installed on our computer. Of course, the proper use of such software requires a prior commitment in the study of various parameters that come into play, because it is obvious that this is not simply input numbers in a program. So, we can and we must know more about going to carefully read the various articles on the same website. That is needed with the online application too, but in doing so you avoid to install the software on your computer.
But let's get straight to the point.
Suppose we want to find the schedule of openings for a given DXpedition. For example, VP8O (South Orkney Island) , whose activities should begin within days.
Well, let's go on the site VOACAP online. The month and year to be reported on the graph are already preset to the current ones, but if we want to report the plot to a different month or year, just choose the year and month of interest with the appropriate menu in the upper right. Let's move now on the Google world map the two placeholders, one (blue) on the location of the DXpedition and one (red) on our own.
    Then select through the menus:
    - an antenna for the TX side and RX side
    - the transmit power
    - short path or long path

At this point, click the button at the bottom right "Run the prediction!" and after a few seconds the application will provide the following chart:

In this graph, above, we see the data of the radio circuit.
The graph shows the probability of achieving a CW-grade transmission quality on the circuit. In particular, it reports on the horizontal axis the UTC time and on the ordinate the frequency in MHz. Each point on the Cartesian plane has a color ranging from blue (0% reliability) to brown (100 % reliability). To the right of the graph we see the color legend. In the graph is also represented the MUF (maximum usable frequency), in red.
Basically, this chart shows us, depending on the time of the day, what is the best frequency on which to try to listen to our DXpedition.
Finally, at the bottom in the chart, is the bar with the sunrise and sunset times of the two locations.
If all this is not enough, you can still develop a coverage map, always online: http://www.voacap.com/coverage.html
